Here's how you can copy 9 iconic fashion moments from the movie "Selena"
I’ve seen the movie Selena easily more than 1,000 times, and every time I see Jennifer Lopez (who played Selena Quintanilla) wearing that white rhinestone halter dress I know it’s time to grab the tissues. It’s been 20 years since the iconic biopic, Selena, hit theaters and yet it feels like we lost la reina (the queen) just yesterday.
Even as the movie marks its 20 year anniversary, Selena was a true visionary with her fashion, and definitely ahead of her time. Today, mesh tops, monochromatic ensembles, and bedazzled bustiers are trendy. With music festivals like Coachella and SXSW, it doesn’t seem like busti-cacas are going anywhere, either.
To celebrate Selena’s iconic outfits, we picked nine of our favorite looks from the movie.
So get your wallets ready, because it’s going to be hard to not buy everything on this list!
1Bidi Bidi Bom Bom outfit
So many Selena fans have rocked this look during Halloween, including me, that it had to be on here. Who can forget this fabulous outfit during the movie when you just wanna grab the tortilla roller and belt out the lyrics to “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom.”
Zip Up Sequin Bustier, $24.95
Throw on a black ribbon with pins to get that full Selena criss-cross bustier look!
Red Heart Earrings, $9.99
If you don’t want to DIY your bustier and/or leggings with red bedazzle, then you can buy this set!
Probably one of the most memorable outfits and moments from the movie is when Selena’s dad sees her in a bustier for the first time and hilariously says “bustiquela, es un bra!”
Cotton Denim Jacket, $29.90
Colorful Bustier, $59
Medium Silver Hoops,$7.50
3Anything for Selenas
During that iconic scene where the bumper falls off by the bus of Selena, she has the cutest white crop top, high-waisted shorts, and white sneakers. Not surprisingly, that look is back on trend! To complete this outfit, all you need is a bumper….just kidding!
Throw on a little bandeau underneath ($10.50) if you don’t wanna show off too much skin!
High-Waist Shorts, $19.99
White Sneakers, $44.95
4Como La Flor realness
This white ensemble is classic, but that windbreaker jacket just gives it a Sporty Spice edge (before there was Sporty Spice). Only Selena could rock an athleisure bomber jacket with a fancy bedazzled white bra!
White Bomber Jacket, $27.90
White Beaded Bustier, $30
5Me siento muy…excited for this outfit
Selena was the definition of what it meant to be a Mexican-American. While we sometimes have to be “more Mexican than the Mexicans, and more American than the Americans,” this scene in the movie really exemplifies how Selena was able to be both — mixing Spanish and English while she was in Mexico.
White Ruffle Blouse, $22.99
Black Leather Jacket, $24.90
Black High-Waisted Sailor Pants, $27.95
6The “How ya doing, Houston, Texas?” purple jumpsuit
This ensemble is legendary. Even if you don’t know Selena’s music or who she is, you know about this purple jumpsuit. Selena beat her own record, having almost 67k fans in the stadium that night! It’s no wonder the movie opens up with this concert.
Purple Jumpsuit, $128.80
Big Silver Earrings, $19.54
7No Me Queda Mas
This moment in the movie is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. She’s so happy and in love, yet we know that things are going to go downhill from here. When she sings “No Me Queda Mas” it’s hard to keep it together.
Newsboy hat, $50
8The “I want the the whole world dancing to my music and wearing my clothes” look
Try not to tear up reading that quote! This is probably the best part of the movie because Selena is truly happy. Her dad finally gave his blessing about her marriage with guitarist Chris Perez, she’s ready to open up her boutique, and she is taking off as an artist. Yup, time to grab the tissues.
Denim Vest, $49.99
Button Up Floral Maxi Dress, $32.99
Silver Necklace, $16 to $18
9When Selena opens up her boutique in a chic ensemble
Even though Yolanda makes an appearance during this part (yikes!), Selena is at the grand opening of her boutique. In true Selena fashion, she rocked a sheer top with a black bustier underneath.
Black Bustier, $14.99
Rose Embroidered Black Jacket, $44.97
The best thing about online shopping? You don’t have to say, “Excuse me, Miss. We don’t need the dress.” However, if you wanna save a few extra bucks on some of these items, DIY your bustiers!
Grab your besties or the Chris Perez in your life, and pop in Selena wearing one of these nine inspired outfits!
