All the songs we so badly want She & Him to cover
As a big fan of Zooey Deschanel and her amazing indie band with the great M. Ward, She & Him, I’ve been obsessing over their new album, “Classics,” ever since it came out earlier this month. In fact, I’ve been obsessing over it since they announced they would be releasing a new album, paying homage to some of the greatest classics, and it did not disappoint. As we all know, She & Him has created a bunch of cool songs—from original material to some very sweet covers of different artists—turning the band into a “must-hear” for people who enjoy classics new and old. One could say that She & Him creates such a nice nostalgic effect on some (OK, most) of their songs, that you can talk about them for hours and still think of more covers you wish they’d release.
“Classics” is, as mentioned, an homage to some of their favorite songs; and it has some great, great material. But, because we’re super fans and we’re allowed to dream, we began to wonder what other amazing classic songs we wished She & Him would cover. Below is a list of the top five tracks from the 50s, 60s, and 70s that we’d love to hear from Zooey and M. Ward.
1. Under the Boardwalk by The Drifters
OK, as we all know, this is an early-60s classic and, in its time, has been covered by multiple bands (even The Rolling Stones!). The song is short but sweet and charming and so romantic, and would be the perfect material for She & Him.
2. Love is Strange by Mickey & Sylvia

This is a great 50s classic from Mickey & Sylvia. We’ve heard it in quite a few films—even Martin Scorsese has used it. It’s quite a soft and romantic song, and its rhythm is a little bit similar to some She & Him songs, so it’d fit with the band. Plus, Zooey would be perfect at the iconic “baby, oh, baby” parts!
3. Have You Ever Seen The Rain by Creedence Clearwater Revival
Well, this Creedence Clearwater Revival song has been played in countless films. It’s a little country and very powerful, and while there’s a big difference between John Fogerty and Zooey Deschanel’s voices, we know just how wonderfully She & Him can turn a classic song with a different style (just like how they added a bit of blues to “I Put A Spell On You”). So, why not?
4. Hello Mary Lou by Ricky Nelson
A 60s classic that has had some cool covers as well, but would be even more awesome if covered by M. Ward. I mean, just listen to “Magic Trick” and imagine this song in a similar style and faster tempo.
5. Leaving on a jet plane by Peter, Paul, & Mary

Another 50s classic that has been covered by man. It is quite a nice and calm song, kind of similar to “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me,” so it would obviously be very cool.
What would you add to the wish list?
Patryk Suchocki is from Mexico. He is currently a student of Cultural Management at the University of Guadalajara. He enjoys good old classic rock, especially from the 60s, which is why he enjoys She & Him so much. He’s also a big fan of Zooey Deschanel, indie films, Kristen Wiig, Parks & Recreation, Quentin Tarantino, and a bunch more random stuff.
