The trailer for Sharp Objects looks absolutely *wild* — and hello, it’s our new summer obsession

HBO has just released the official trailer for its upcoming limited series Sharp Objects, and it looks straight-up bonkers. The ominous eight-part limited series, which is based on Gillian Flynn’s debut novel of the same name, is promising to serve Gone Girl drama set in a town with eerie Stephen King vibes.

Sharp Objects stars Amy Adams as journalist Camille Preaker, who is sent to her small Missouri town to report on the grisly murders of two young girls. However, returning to her hometown to cover the mysterious murders is decidedly not a fun trip down memory lane, as it triggers horrifying memories from her youth and forces her to reunite with her estranged mother (Patricia Clarkson). But covering the story doesn’t just open old wounds for Camille, it also has the potential to take a dangerous turn.

The trailer teases a very dark homecoming, giving us a glimpse at a small town full of ominous secrets and the traumatic events of Camille’s childhood that continue to haunt her. Sharp Objects also stars Elizabeth Perkins, Chris Messina, and Matt Craven, while It breakout star Sophia Lillis plays young Camille.

This series looks like it has all our favorite Gillian Flynn traits: a female protagonist with a shadowy past, looming danger, and plenty of secrets. We’re already on the edge of our seats.

The eight-part series is being directed by Big Little Lies helmer Jean-Marc Vallee, and was written by Flynn and series creator Marti Noxon. We couldn’t think of a better trio to bring the darkness of Sharp Objects to life. With Amy Adams and Patricia Clarkson at the center of the mystery, we have a feeling this limited series could be the next Big Little Lies.

Sharp Objects is set to premiere on HBO on July 8th.
