Shailene Woodley opened up about the traumatic hours following her arrest at Standing Rock

When we heard Shailene Woodley was arrested last year, we were shocked…until we discovered the reason why. The actress — who has always been passionate about environmental issues and taking care of our planet — was taken into police custody during a peaceful protest of the Dakota Access Pipeline. And now, Woodley is opening up about the arrest — which was streamed via Facebook Live at the time.

Woodley was arrested and charged with criminal trespassing and engaging in a riot in October 2016. In a recent interview with Marie Claire U.K., she mentioned seeing two U.S. military tanks at the protest before her arrest. “This is some Divergent shit,” she said, a nod to the dystopian trilogy she starred in. “The only time in my life that I saw a tank like that was on set in Atlanta.”

After the arrest, The Fault in Our Stars actress was taken to Morton County jail.

“I was strip-searched. Like get naked, turn over, spread your butt cheeks, bend over, she revealed. “They were looking for drugs in my ass. When you’re in a jail cell and then shut that door, you realize no one can save you. If there’s a fire and they decide not to open the door, you’ll die. You are a caged animal.

Fortunately, because both offenses were misdemeanors, her time behind bars didn’t last long. Woodley was able to post a $500 bond and was released a few hours after being taken into custody.

And the HBO star’s sense of humor is still very much in tact. While talking to Stephen Colbert back in February, she joked about wanting a mugshot do-over.

“I would have made, like, a face. I’m just looking at the person [taking the photo] like, ‘Are you kidding me right now?’” she said.

We applaud Shailene for her commitment to standing up for what’s right, and we’re glad she continues to fight for what she believes in.
