Turns out, the majority of ‘Sex and the City’ was based on real events
Ever notice how darn relatable Sex and the City is? Like, Carrie gets inside our MINDS, and we can all relate to so many things that happen to those ladies of NYC. Well, maybe we can’t relate to all of the things; some pretty insane drama and sexual conquests happen, obviously, but that’s what made the show hilarious and so addicting. Those things couldn’t happen IRL, because it’s just a television show, right?
Nope. Turns out there’s a reason why we relate to Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda oh so well — because every single sex or relationship-related thing that happened in the show was based on a real event. Even the absolutely insane things. Yes, seriously.
In an interview with IMDbAsks, Sex and the City director Cynthia Nixon explained that all of the plotlines that happened — no matter how totally wild — were based on something that happened to one of the writers, or to someone the writers knew.
“They had a rule in the writing that they couldn’t put anything in an episode that didn’t literally happen to someone in the writer’s room or someone they knew firsthand,” Nixon told IMDbAsks. “It couldn’t be, like, my father’s brother’s sister’s shoe-repair guy heard once that, you know. So, the outlandish physical, sexual things that happened — they really did happen.”
Yep. That means that dude who only wanted to have sex after his sports team won — that was a real thing, guys. Same with the S&M restaurant, and that ex of Carrie’s who broke up with her using a Post-It. So does that mean someone was actually able to afford insanely expensive designer shoes on a writer’s budget in New York City, too? I’m just gonna pretend that part doesn’t apply, for my own personal sanity.
