Why the creator of ‘Sex and the City’ hates that Carrie and Big ended up together
If you’re a Sex and the City fan, you probably remember the finale episode of the series, when Big finally says “I love you” to Carrie. It took him six seasons to say those three little words out loud, so of course, fans of the show were thrilled when it finally happened. Fans felt at peace with the way things ended (but were really just beginning) for Carrie and Big.
But SATC creator Darren Star wasn’t as impressed with the highly anticipated series finale. In a new Kindle Singles interview, Star admits that he didn’t have a say in the direction the last episodes of the show took.
“For me, in a way – and I didn’t [write] those last episodes. If you’re empowering other people to write and produce your show, you can’t … say certain things,” Star said. “At a certain point, you’ve got to let them follow their vision.
Star suggest that the show’s happy ending was, in fact, a betrayal of the series.
“I think the show ultimately betrayed what it was about, which was that women don’t ultimately find happiness from marriage,” he said. “Not that they can’t. But the show initially was going off script from the romantic comedies that had come before it. That’s what had made women so attached. At the end, it became a conventional romantic comedy. But unless you’re there to write every episode, you’re not going to get the ending you want.”
While we totally get what Star is saying, if Big and Carrie didn’t end up together, then the follow-up SATC movies probably wouldn’t have made much sense — or even happened at all. That would have meant a lot less Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte. And that’s just not something we can get behind.
