Sew Cute: Monogrammed Notebook
Any journalers out there? I’ve been a writer for pretty much most of my life—I have notebooks dating back to when I first learned to form letters, and every word in them is misspelled, except for my name. I always have a notebook (or two, or three) sitting in my purse or on my bedside table. I use them to collect snippets of ideas for poems or short stories, or to note the seemingly small details of the day. I love to go back through and rediscover old memories and secret hopes.
Notebooks don’t have to be fancy, of course, but this is an easy way to add some extra flair to a basic journal. I made mine with my initials (Sarah Elizabeth Hatheway, for the curious), but you could easily add a single word, a phrase or even a little picture. After my slightly more advanced project last week, I decided to do something quick and fun, with minimal tricky needlework. This notebook can easily be completed in a couple of hours—and what’s more rewarding than finishing a craft in an afternoon?
Materials:
- Small notebook (can be spiral or bound)
- Colorful felt
- Thread in a contrasting color to the felt
- Basic sewing needle
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Pencil or ballpoint pen
- Craft glue
Craft away:
Measure the cover of your notebook, and cut a piece of felt of the same size.
Draw a 3-inch wide circle onto the piece of felt, on the side that will be facing out.
Sketch your initials into the circle.
Cut a couple of feet of thread and fold it in half, then thread the needle and tie a knot.
Stitch over the sketched lines on the felt. Use a looping motion, and keep your stitches close together to give the look of a solid line. Make sure you knot your work on the back of the felt, so the knots won’t be visible.
Once you’ve finished stitching the circle and letters, spread a thin layer of glue over the cover of the notebook. Glue the felt to the notebook.
Once the glue is dry, you’re finished! You have a unique little notebook, ready to be filled with your story inspirations or private thoughts.
