Sew Cute: Holiday Cards

When I was younger, I thought of writing and sending out holiday cards as something only adults do. Now that I’m older—even if I still don’t feel particularly “grown up” all the time—I feel like I’m starting to get it. There’s just something special about receiving a handwritten note from someone, that little recognition that they’re thinking of you. It’s so warm and caring, which is what makes it such a perfect seasonal tradition.

This year, I decided to make my cards even more personal by hand-making them. I kept the format sweet and simple: just a brief message, “Season’s Greetings,” and a cute little snowflake to add a graphic element. This is another one of those easy-to-customize projects, although I highly recommend using some sparkly cardstock, because honestly, what’s more festive than glitter?

Materials:

  • 3 sheets of 8 ½ inch by 11 inch white cardstock
  • 3 sheets of 12 inch by 12 inch cardstock in a contrasting color
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Craft glue
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Colorful thread
  • Basic sewing needle

Craft away:

  • Cut 6 rectangles out of the white cardstock, 6 inches long by 4 inches wide.
  • Cut 6 rectangles out of the colorful cardstock, 8 inches long by 6 inches wide.
  • Write your holiday message on the white cards. I didn’t worry too much about keeping my handwriting perfect—I wanted these to have that cheery, handmade look. You can add little pictures, like my snowflakes, to the cards too.
  • Cut a couple of feet of thread and fold it in half, then thread the needle and tie a knot.
  • Using a simple in-and-out motion, stitch over the words on each card. I recommend poking holes into the paper first to make the process easier. Avoid pulling too hard on the thread so the paper doesn’t rip, and remember to knot your work at the end of each row of stitches.
  • Glue each white card to a colorful card, with the back of the white card facing the front of the colorful card.
  • After the cards are dry, write your holiday wishes on the back of the colorful card.
  • You’re all set! Now you can send your warm wishes to your loved ones this holiday season.
