Seth Meyers just found a silver lining to attacks on the free press and it involves a new “Bye, Felicia!”
Leave it to Seth Meyers to find a silver lining in attacks on the free press. Only Meyers could take a sore subject and load it with enough sarcasm to create a new catchphrase that’ll make us laugh, even as we fight for continued protection of fundamental freedoms.
After Donald Trump’s interesting first news conference on Wednesday, Meyers used his show to help ease everyone’s pain with a funny way to look at some of the comments made during the press event.
The president-elect spoke with reporters about what his plans as president are and then things got awkward. When CNN reporter Jim Acosta asked Trump a question he was shut down, presumably for reporting on the allegations of Trump’s involvement with Russia.
“You are fake news!” Trump said in a very sassy tone, and it’s that line that Meyers has totally run with.
Sure, it’s not okay that Trump yelled at a reporter and claimed he was “fake news,” since we do have freedom of the press, but what the Late Night With Seth Meyers host took away from the comment is too good.
The 43-year-old late night host decided that “You are fake news!” is basically the new “Bye, Felicia!” and we love it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwcRIyvPmWc
On Thursday, Meyers’ gave multiple examples of when to use this sassy remark during his show.
"You're the worst member of this sorority, Kayleigh. Well you, Claire, are fake news!" Meyers said as his first example.
“So we’ve got an incoming president waging war on the press and claiming he doesn’t have to divest from his business,” he later said. “You know what I have to say to that? Bye fake news!”
The thing about political fights or fights for freedom is that you’ve got to keep people motivated somehow, and while the issues are critically important, a little humor can go a long way. Bye, Felicia and that was SO fake news!
