‘Serial’ and ‘Jinx’ fans, Netflix just dropped your next must-binge

True crime stories are in… when it comes to television and radio shows, that is. After all, who hasn’t binge-listened to Serial or watched The Jinx from start to finish in a single night? And the latest one, Making A Murderer, is now streaming on Netflix as of Dec. 18.

The show follows Steven Avery of Manitowoc, Wisconsin. He spent years in prison for a sexual assault that he claimed he did not commit—and, 18 years later, in 2003, he was absolved by DNA evidence and he got out. But, as a result of being gone so long, he lost friends and family, and his wife left him, too. Afterwards, he went after the government via civil lawsuits for having been wrongly convicted. However, in 2005, he was arrested for the murder of Teresa Halbach, a young photographer.

The question is, who is Avery? A murderer? An innocent victim who was wrongly accused? So many themes emerge in the show, it’ll make you want to pursue a career in law—or at least investigative journalism.

The series was made over a ten-year (!) period by Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos. Well worth the wait, we say! To tell the story, they relied on interviews and phone calls with those closest to Avery—family, friends, lawyers, and anyone associated with the cases—as well as news reports, interrogations, and depositions.

“It’s a story with a twist,” a Dateline producer said of the case in actual Dateline footage from the time. “It grabs people’s attention.”

That, it does.

The show is sure to keep you on the edge-of-your-seat. Like any great mystery (and Netflix show, really), you’ll want to watch all 10 episodes of the documentary in a row, so cancel your other plans, make some popcorn, and invite over a few friends, because you WON’T be able to keep it to yourself. (You may not want to watch it right before bed, though, unless you want crazy nightmares.)

If you need more convincing to watch it, here’s the trailer.

In case you don’t have Netflix, you can even check out the pilot on YouTube. We’ll BRB… in about ten hours.
