Serena Williams just won Wimbledon! Go Serena!

All right, everybody, on your feet, it’s time to give it up big time for Serena Williams, who, at 33 years old, in her sixth Wimbledon, just won her 4th consecutive Grand Slam title (and the 21st title of her career, for those of you keeping score at home). Also, of note, Williams has kept an undefeated record since winning last year’s U.S. Open and this year’s Australian and French Opens. The industry has dubbed her win of those four straight majors “The Serena Slam,” and it is the second time Serena has accomplished this remarkable feat in her career. If Serena wins the U.S Open in September, she would become the first player in almost 30 years to achieve a calendar-year grand slam (the last athlete to achieve this honor was Steffi Graf in 1988),

Williams beat her opponent, 21-year-old Garbiñe Muguruza of Spain, today 6-4, 6-4. As sweet as Williams’ victory is, the sportsmanship she showed her rival was even sweeter. As the Washington Post reports, when Williams saw Muguruza begin to cry as she accepted her runner’s-up trophy, Williams was immediately at the ready with words of comfort.

“Don’t be sad, you’ll be holding this trophy soon,” Williams assured Muguruza. “Believe me.”

The runner-up then proceeded to match the victor in sportsmanship and awesomeness.

“A Grand Slam final to me is a dream come true,” Muguruza told the crowd. “I also want to say congratulations to Serena who’s showing us she’s world No. 1.”

Congratulations to both Williams and Muguruza for kicking ass on the court and being so kind to each other once the game was through. You inspire us!
