Serena Williams wore a surprising pair of shoes to the royal wedding, and we’re copying her look
Dressing for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding was no easy task for guests. First, there was the ceremony at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, which required something tasteful, probably pastel, and a statement hat. Following a lunch reception held by the queen, there was a more intimate reception for 200 guests at Frogmore House, which also required a glam look. That’s a long day for high heels, which is why we’re all about Serena Williams’ royal wedding shoes.
Serena attended the wedding with husband Alexis Ohanian and rocked a very tasteful, pink Versace dress and heels to the morning service. But a video posted to her Instagram page reveals that for the reception, she went with something a little more comfortable. Under her gorgeous floral Valentino gown, Williams opted to wear a pair of sneakers. Because if a girl’s going to eat, drink, and dance all night with the royal family, she might as well be comfortable, right?
Serena wrote in an Instagram caption that she often wears sneakers with her evening gowns and that she likes to be “comfy for long nights.”
She added that the sneaks were handed over at the last minute by Valentino’s creative director, Pierpaolo Piccioli, who dressed the tennis player for the evening. Williams said, “I told him, ‘Be careful. I tend to be comfy for long nights.’” Her look for the night is evidence that you don’t have to be uncomfortable to look like a goddess.
Here’s the video where she shows off her kicks.
You’d never know she had sneakers on underneath the dress, though.
Alexis didn’t look too shabby, either.
It’s as if most of the stars invited to the wedding reception saved their best dresses for late night. Not that we didn’t love Serena’s pink look and fascinator, but this Valentino gown is what party dress dreams are made of.
Guests at the wedding reception reportedly danced the night away after an all-organic sit-down dinner. DJ Sam Totolee was in charge of the music, but Idris Elba reportedly hopped on for a few songs, too. At midnight, there were fireworks and burgers passed around to guests, along with a custom cocktail called “When Harry Met Meghan,” which is almost too cute for words.
With all that action, Serena was right to wear sneakers to stay comfy. If you’re going to dance to DJ Idris Elba and eat a burger, you don’t want to be worried about blisters.
