Senators are fighting for new policies surrounding sexual assaults on flights, because sadly, it’s a real problem
Unfortunately, we don’t live in a perfect world. We get it. But sometimes we learn about things that seriously never even occurred to us, and this issue seriously has our minds boggled. So get this: apparently, sexual assaults on flights are a serious problem. Like, WTF!? It’s seriously so messed up. Luckily, though, two senators are calling for a policy change for in-flight sexual assaults, because sexual assaults on flights (or, obv, ever) are just not okay.
Sadly, though, they’re all too common.
According to Business Insider, the FBI has opened 58 investigations into in-flight sexual assault allegations on commercial aircraft, and those are only the ones we know about.
When it comes to sexual violence, the number of attacks reported are almost always lower than the actual number of attacks that take place. So why is this issue coming to light now? Well, higher profile cases have come into the public eye.
Just this year, a woman named Jessica Leeds told The New York Times that Donald Trump sexually assaulted her on a flight.
She says that the Republican presidential candidate grabbed her breasts and attempted to put his hand up her skirt an hour after takeoff.
As a result, senators Patty Murray (D-WA) and Bob Casey (D-PA) are asking the Department of Justice and Federal Aviation Administration to come up with a standard protocol for how to deal with sexual assault on flights. While it isn’t necessarily a perfect solution, it’s a start.
