Senator Kamala Harris created a 45-song playlist to celebrate African-American artists

Imagine this: You’re hanging out on a sunny afternoon. It’s not too hot out, and you have a refreshing beverage in hand. The only thing missing? The perfect soundtrack. There’s just so much music out there, where do you start? Well, thanks to Senator Kamala Harris, you don’t have to do the work  because she compiled a 45-track playlist for Spotify, in celebration of African-American Music Appreciation Month.

With music by everyone from Erykah Badu and Beyoncé to Prince and Aretha Franklin, this is sure to be the soundtrack of the season.

Sen. Harris curated the playlist, called  “#AAMAM – All Time Favorites,” picking her favorite songs from a variety of genres — R&B, jazz, reggae, funk, and more — to showcase the amazing contributions that the African-American community has made to music, and how they’ve helped pioneer many of the genres represented.

In an interview with Blavity, the senator says,

"Our nation has an indelible soundtrack, songs that have become anthems recognized across the world. Much of that soundtrack is inspired and informed by the vast contributions of African-American artists in jazz, R&B, rap, hip-hop, and beyond. No matter where you are from or what you look like, music is a bond that can bring us all together. To celebrate African-American music is to dance, sing, and even march to the rhythms that have long served as vehicles for honesty, inspiration, struggle, success and joy.

So next time you need some music to fire up your summer afternoon, but your friends don’t know what to play, you can just laugh.

Because thanks to Senator Harris, you have the best playlist around. And since it will keep expanding until the end of the month, you don’t have to feel guilty about having it on repeat.
