These are the futuristic sneakers that just sold for over $50,000
“Power laces! All right!” Marty McFly exclaimed as he slipped into a souped up pair of Nikes in Back to the Future II. Now someone else is saying those exact words after purchasing a pair of self-lacing sneakers for over $50,000.
Heritage Auctions ran the public bidding process that resulted in a pair of 2016 Nike Air Mag sneakers being sold for $52,500.
The sneakers were originally estimated to be worth a minimum of $30,000 and are exact replicas of Marty McFly’s sneaks from Back to the Future II. They use self-lacing technology, they light up, and this pair is signed, numbered, and truly meant for display purposes.

When the sneakers first came out in 2016 their availability was extremely limited. Nike fans could enter a drawing on the Nike website to win a pair. All proceeds from that contest went to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
The concept for the Nike Mag and its auto-lacing has been in the works since 2005, as Nike Senior Innovator Tiffany Beers told TechCrunch in 2016. In 2012, the motor technology finally advanced enough that the self-lacing mechanism could actually fit inside the shoe.
Watching the Nike Mag lacing in process seriously gives us flash-forwards to the future.

If you can believe it, this most recent $52,500 auction bid isn’t the most someone has put down for a pair of 2016 Nike Mags. According to Mashable, last year at a private Hong Kong auction, a pair of these same sneakers sold for a whopping $104,000!
We don’t think Marty McFly would be traipsing through dirty city streets in his power-lacing sneaks if he knew how much they’d be worth in ~the future~.

They may cost a small fortune, but self-lacing sneakers are here to stay. The future is now, people.
