We finally learned what Selena’s “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” really means

Selena Quintanilla’s passing may have happened over 20 year ago, but thanks to the internet, we’re still learning about the Queen of Tejano music. The most bittersweet part, though, is the more we learn about her, the more we miss her. While we could settle for simply wearing our favorite Selena merch, learning more about the star’s life (and especially her music) is even more intimate.

In an interview with Don Francisco on Sábado Gigante in 1994, Selena revealed the meaning of her hit “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom,” and her answer made our hearts skip a beat.

During the interview, not only do we find out that Selena is the one who wrote that hip-shaking anthem, but also that it was inspired by her own relationships and life story. She reveals that “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” is…

"...the sound the heart makes when you see a man pass by. It sounds like, 'Bidi bidi bom bom.'"

The best part? According to PopSugar, Selena’s brother, A.B. Quintanilla, said that Selena wrote the jam after her to-be husband Chris Pérez joined her band. Now our hearts are fluttering.

We also learned that Selena was six when she started singing in her dad’s restaurant, and that she never actually wanted to be a singer professionally. Apparently, she thought of singing solely as a hobby. We can’t deny we’re glad it became more for Selena, especially after we’re reminded of how great of a performer she was when we watch “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” on Sábato Gigante.

Long live the queen!
