Selena Gomez’s “burrito sweat bed” is how she stays fit and we are intrigued

Celebrities have more access to unconventional beauty treatments than the average person, so when Selena Gomez revealed one of her preferred methods to be something called a “sweat bed,” it piqued our interest — especially when she said it looked like a burrito. In a recent interview with Elle, Selena described her workout schedule when she’s on tour, and it included Pilates, hiking, and this:

“I have a sweat bed, which looks like a burrito that I wrap myself up in, and I sweat for about 45 minutes,” Selena explained. “I started going to a place called Shape House, and you lay in these beds in a sweatsuit, and they wrap you up and you sweat for 45 minutes and it releases all the toxins of your body, and you kind of feel…kind of the equivalent of a sauna, but it gets your heart rate up, and it gets everything flowing in your body.”

The sweat bed is also called an infrared sauna blanket, and it is supposed to help the body get rid of environmental toxins, metabolic wastes, and other pollutions. Whether sweating actually does help the body get rid of toxins has been widely debated. Some medical professionals say that the body only excretes toxins through urine or feces, while other studies have shown that sweating can eliminate toxins such as phthalates, Bisphenol A (BPA), and heavy metals. Infrared saunas are supposed to be seven times more effective at getting rid of toxins than traditional saunas.

Shape House, the Los Angeles spa where Selena goes, has sessions for $45, but for a cool $400, you can burrito yourself up anytime at home! Amazon and eBay both have infrared pods for sale.  Here is an example of what one of these looks like:

“It’s changed my skin, it’s kind of changed my body as well, so it feels really good. That’s kind of been something that works for me personally,” Selena said. If you don’t mind the idea of sweating inside of a blanket for almost an hour, maybe this is something to consider instead of a juice cleanse the next time you need a detox.
