Selena Gomez just explained that she will not be pulling the classic Taylor Swift move on her tour
During her 1989 World Tour, Taylor Swift was all about her squad. She was constantly inviting them stage with her, because that’s what squads are for.
Selena Gomez, on the other hand, may be good friends with Tay, but she’s definitely not all about the squad. Her Revival tour kicked off in Las Vegas on Friday, and she made it very clear in an interview with EW that a squad situation will not be happening.
“I made a joke about this [when] Taylor was in the room,” Selena said when asked if she’d be inviting any of her famous friends on stage with her. “She looked at me like, ‘You should totally do that!’ I was like, ‘I can’t have all those people come on my stage!’ She’s like, ‘Why not?’”
Great point, Tay. Why not?
“Because I’m not Taylor Swift!” Selena told her (and all of us).
Not that there’s anything wrong with having a squad, but Gomez says she’s just in a different place in her career.
“I think I have a different everything about me,” she admitted. “I’ve worked for my whole career, and I’ve always wanted it to be about that. I’ve been in so many situations where it’s like, ‘Oh, you’re friends with this person? You’re with that person?’ All this credibility shit that drives me crazy. I love being able to work with other artists I admire, but I have a lot to do on my own before I am willing to make it all about embracing other people.”
In fact, there will be an entire section of the show where it’ll just be Selena, the mic and her band.
“It’s going to be very conversational: I’ve never written, ‘This is where I’m going to stop and say this,’” she said. “Whatever that night makes me feel, I say it whenever I want. When I see a girl crying, or excited, I feel what she’s feeling.”
You do you, girl. We’re excited to see the show — with or without a famous squad.
