Selena Gomez pushed for the queer love story in her “Bad Liar” music video, and we’re so glad she did

We’ve said it once, we’ll say it twice, we’ll probably say it a thousand times: Representation in media is so important. Everyone deserves to feel like someone understands them, and that they’re not alone. Even in the world of music and music videos, this is something that’s still evolving — especially in terms of queer and LGBTQIA+ representation. That’s why we’re so hyped to learn that Selena Gomez pushed for the queer love story in her “Bad Liar” music video.

Yes girl, you go! And not only did she push for it, but she insisted on it herself.

In the video, we see Selena navigating high school, day dreaming, distracting herself by thinking about her crush. All totally normal *just girly things* until you realize that her crush may or may not be her father’s mistress. Sounds vaguely confusing, right? Absolutely. But what queer love triangle isn’t?

It gets even more confusing when you remember that these characters are all played by Selena Gomez herself.

Jesse Peretz, the director of the video, told Billboard,

"She brought on this idea that somewhere within this love triangle is lesbian attraction. It just gave me another reason to do — acknowledging that it’s not just heterosexuals in the world."

The best part has to be at the end of the video, when we see Selena dancing alone in her room, in an all too relatable moment. And after her mom comes in, when Selena pretends to be asleep, we see her holding a photo of her crush.

Who can hate a love triangle as juicy as this? We just hope Selena doesn’t get her heart hurt.
