Big ups to Selena Gomez for her #1 album (we’re celebrating with our #1 Selena moments)
If you haven’t noticed, we are completely head-over-heels for Selena Gomez. Not only is she ultra-talented with a fabulous voice, but she’s always down to keep things real, despite the fact that she’s a major celeb. She’s no longer a teen anymore — she’s a grown woman who’s officially come into her own. A fact made immensely clear, considering her album Revival IS OFFICIALLY NUMBER ONE ON THE CHARTS. YAAAAAS.
Revival, which is Selena’s first album for Interscope after four albums for Disney’s Hollywood Records, had 117,000 sales during its first week, reports Billboard. We’re not totally shocked, TBH, because we’ve been loving every bit of Revival. Obviously, the 23-year-old is probably celebrating the big win, and we decided to have a celebration of our own, too — by highlighting the moments Selena secured herself as #1 in our eyes (even without Revival!).
When she released a video starring her biggest fans
OK, so maybe this one DOES have to do with Revival. Selena illustrated her true appreciation for those who appreciate her music by using footage of a real audience from an event at the Palace Theatre in LA, completing what was basically a love letter to her fans. When she used her career to express her newfound self-love
Selena’s latest music has been a huge departure from her earlier pop hits. That’s because she’s no longer the teen we once knew, and has blossomed into a self-reliant, mature woman — and she wants everyone to know that. “[‘Good For You’] represents the confidence that I truly have inside of me,” Selena explained on New York’s Z100’s morning show in June. “I think it’s the vulnerable side that I’ve expressed, but it’s also the combination of just feeling myself. It’s good!”
When she bravely opened up about her struggle with lupus
Selena had to take a brief break from her career, which made the rumor mill go into overdrive, with a lot of tabloid-infused hypotheses saying her hiatus was due to substance abuse. But really, Selena was suffering from lupus, and she had to stay out of the spotlight for a time because of her health. “I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy,” Selena told Billboard. “That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke. . . I wanted so badly to say, ‘You guys have no idea. I’m in chemotherapy. You’re assholes. I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again.”
When she dropped some majorly important truth bombs about sexuality
Obviously, Selena has had to deal with pretty much every kind of rumor. And that includes rumors about her sexuality. She addressed those rumors like the boss that she is.
“Oh, I think everybody [questions their sexuality], no matter who they are,” she told PrideSource. “I do, yeah, of course. Absolutely. I think it’s healthy to gain a perspective on who you are deep down, question yourself and challenge yourself; it’s important to do that.”
When she got super real about her body
When you’re in the spotlight as a major celeb, especially a woman, it’s not exactly uncommon to have your body criticized from every angle in magazines and online. But this year, Selena made it clear that she’s far, far above that kind of negativity.
“The only thing I have to do is be happy with myself, and I am,” she told Seventeen. “I want to be able to eat a burger without someone having their say about my figure. I’m not particularly dainty by nature and don’t plan to starve myself to change that. Girls should accept themselves the way they are. And others need to be more accepting of us too. We deserve more respect!”
So, not only is Selena BONKERS talented, but a fabulous role model for girls and women everywhere. Landing the #1 spot on the Billboard charts is waaaay high up there on the list of world achievements, but we’re pretty sure that Selena’s career and overall life-rocking will only skyrocket from here. Congrats, Selena — we heart you!
