Selena Gomez just shared some HUGE news about Season 2 of “13 Reasons Why”
Try your best not to squeal with pure, Netflix-infused joy, but Season 2 of 13 Reasons Why has been confirmed by Selena Gomez herself. So there’s more to learn about Hannah Baker and her troubled, troubled friends. Gomez, who has a producer’s credit for the show, wrote in a comment on her Instagram page, “their story isn’t over.” Then, “Season 2 of #13ReasonsWhy is coming.”
Brian Yorkey will stay on as the showrunner to put together 13 hour-long episodes that are expected to hit the streaming service sometime in 2018. Originally, it wasn’t expected that 13 Reasons Why would turn into a multi-season series, but the show was Just. That. Popular. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the second season will pick “up in the aftermath of Hannah Baker’s death and the start of the characters’ complicated journeys toward healing and recovery.”
Last week, Yorkey hinted that the show was super close to getting another round and that it would dig even deeper into Hannah’s story, following the same format as the first season — depicting the present and then cutting to flashbacks. There’s no confirmation yet that Katherine Langford (who plays Hannah) will return, but Yorkey said that “Hannah’s story is still very much not finished. She’s an integral part of whatever the next chapter of the story is, and she’s very much still at the center of it,” so it’s likely that she will be a part of Season 2.
Although the show was hugely popular (and was one of the most-tweeted-about shows ever), there was some criticism about how 13 Reasons depicted suicide, with some even saying that the show “glorified” the act. Both the cast and crew behind the show backed up the creative choices, though. Nic Sheff, the writer who was responsible for the episode in which Hannah actually kills herself, wrote an op-ed saying that he believes the most irresponsible thing would have been to NOT show the suicide.
Now that there’s a second season, which will probably have more trigger warnings than the first, the show will have another chance to dig into the subject of teen suicide and explore other angles. However they decide to do it, we’re sure it’ll be just as binge-worthy as the first time around.
