Selena Gomez put her Instagram on private after feeling misrepresented in a “Billboard” interview
Selena Gomez is the most followed person on Instagram, so it’s a bit of a shock that she just set her Instagram to private. It’s unclear WHY she put her ‘gram on private, but an exasperated Insta story posted just moments before she went private might give us some clues.
Gomez was recently named Billboard‘s Woman of the Year which included an enlightening interview with the singer. The beginning of the interview featured a seemingly innocuous remark about a giant teddy bear that Gomez owns. Gomez screengrabbed what we’ll call “the teddy bear portion” of her Billboard interview and captioned it, “Never will I let another human being guess my words ever again. Or invite them in my home. That is so hurtful. The most ridiculous’ part of that is no one knowing my heart when I say things.”
Here’s a full transcript of the portion of the Billboard article that Gomez calls “hurtful.”
“There’s a five-foot teddy bear sprawled across the kitchen floor in Selena Gomez’s North Hollywood home. ‘I know, I know,’ says Gomez, rolling her eyes, acknowledging that the stuffed animal doesn’t quite blend with the trio of armchairs nestled in the inviting, marble-accented nook. ‘It was a gift, and at first I thought, ‘This is so ridiculous, I can’t wait until I give it away to another person.’ But Gomez, 25, hasn’t let go of it — yet.”
Shortly after posting the IG story, she set her account to private.

This is interesting because the Billboard interview has been out for five days, so we wonder why it took this long for Gomez to realize that she had a problem with it. We have a hunch that whoever gifted Gomez with the bear was hurt to read that she called it “ridiculous” and is waiting to “give it away.” But as is the problem with print, it’s hard to convey tone. Maybe that “ridiculous” was said with a laugh, and maybe Gomez loves the bear more than this bit of text suggests.
It’s tragic that something like a misquoted bear anecdote is enough to force Gomez to shut down her Instagram. Le sigh.
