Selena Gomez revealed her favorite song on Rare, and it’s all about being willing to give herself more
In the new Spring 2020 issue of Dazed, Selena Gomez took questions from fellow celebrities as well as a collection of super-fans. She was asked about her Latina experience, her vocal style, the first CD she bopped to (Britney Spears, of course), and her thoughts about her brand-new album, Rare, which was released on January 10th.
One fan asked what her favorite song is on Rare, and Gomez responded, “Vulnerable.”
"I don’t know where I heard this from, but [someone] said it was the heart of the album and that was such a compliment to me," she said in her interview to Dazed, published on February 5th. "I think it’s pretty self-explanatory, but it’s me saying I’m willing to give myself more, so are you able to handle what I am and what I need as a woman? [Because] I won’t tolerate anything less."
Nor should you, queen!
And you can see that strength, the understanding that she deserves so much more in a relationship than she has tolerated, in the lyrics.
“If I gave the opportunity to you, then would you blow it? / If I was the greatest thing that happened to you, would you know it? / If my love was like a flower, would you plant it, would you grow it? / I might give you all my body, are you strong enough to hold it?” she sings on “Vulnerable.”
Rare is packed with feminist self-love anthems, so it makes sense that she sees “Vulnerable” as the heart of the album, which centers on a re-focus on herself. So, when another fan asked Gomez which song off Rare best describes and reflects her personal growth and strength, she couldn’t decide between two. She answered, “Vulnerable,” again—though, she added that the song “Ring” describes her growth in a “sassier” way.
"I would have to say 'Vulnerable' again. Or maybe 'Ring,' which has so much sass to it: [Normally] I’m very timid but I think that song represents me being in a place where I’m like, 'I’m okay with being in control and knowing I have the ability to yes or no,' but also, you know, expecting the best. I expect the best and I deserve the best."
