Selena Gomez gets honest about her body, refuses to change it for anyone

Selena Gomez is our body positivity superhero, and here’s why. As Seventeen reports, in a recent interview with German magazine Bravo, Gomez called shenanigans on societal expectations and awesomely stated that she’s totally fine thumbing her nose at narrow beauty standards if it means feeling comfy in her own skin.

“The only thing I have to do is be happy with myself, and I am,” she said. “I want to be able to eat a burger without someone having their say about my figure. I’m not particularly dainty by nature and don’t plan to starve myself to change that. Girls should accept themselves the way they are. And others need to be more accepting of us too. We deserve more respect!”

There’s so much we love about this body-positive call to arms. First off, we just love the honest “I’m not particularly dainty by nature” and now want a screen print tee of that quote on our bodies yesterday. Next, we are all about the only thing on a person’s beauty/body wish list being, “…to be happy with myself…”

Last but DEFINITELY not least, we love that she doesn’t just put the onus on women to accept themselves, but on the world to stop putting insane and impossible pressure on girls to conform to narrow beauty standards. We are not objects, we are human beings, and we love Gomez advocating for the respect we deserve.

This isn’t the first time Gomez has stood up for herself and other women and demanded acceptance. The singer, actress, and all-around rad woman has been saying really awesome, body-positive things that have left us inspired for quite some time now.

One example is when she responded to her haters with one powerful, awesome photo. When trolled about her curves on the Internet, Gomez took to Instagram and posted a self-love bathing suit portrait, a pitch-perfect caption, and a well-aimed hashtag:

Then, there was last year, when she got some rad body-positive ink: “Love yourself first.” To which we say, PREACH.

And then there have been all the wonderful self-love statements she’s made over the years. From informing Twist “I realize everybody wants what they don’t have. But at the end of the day, what you have inside is much more beautiful than what’s on the outside!” to telling Seventeen “You can’t be afraid of what people are going to say, because you’re never going to make everyone happy,” to telling Twitter “I hate Twitter, I love fries,” Gomez proves that she’s a body-positivity hero for us all when it comes to loving herself on the regular (well, herself AND fries.)
