Selena Gomez has a wonderfully honest take on body image
It’s easy to forget that even when stars are selling albums, performing on stage, and dominating magazine covers, they still experience all of the same problems that make us human. Unfortunately, that can mean having to tackle self-esteem and body image. Selena Gomez is one of these stars, but when she spoke to InStyle UK, she opened up about how she managed to overcome all of that—and explained how sometimes that means not overcoming it at all.
After reading some online criticism about her body, the former Disney star felt seriously shattered. “It hurt my feelings because I never experienced that before, but I didn’t want [that] to be my story,” she explained to the magazine. “So I said, ‘I don’t care what you think’ …I’m learning that you can be comfortable and still look beautiful.”
In fact, true beauty is the acceptance of yourself for who you are, which is a lesson Selena was lucky enough to embrace in the face of criticism.
However, that doesn’t mean she has a completely positive, chipper, head-in-the-clouds outlook. That would be impossible. True body acceptance is also understanding that there will be bad days mixed in with the good. “Some days, I like what I see,” she continued. “Other days, I’m like, ‘I’m not even going to bother.’”
We love that Selena keeps it 100% real, and will keep her in mind the next time we need a little confidence boost—even if that means not bothering and going back to bed.
