Selena Gomez’s BFF showed her kidney-donation scar on the red carpet
When news broke earlier this fall that Selena Gomez needed a kidney transplant due to complications from lupus, fans were rightly worried. The one thing that calmed them down? Knowing that Gomez’s bestie was willing to donate an organ to help a friend. Gomez has been spotted out and about post-surgery, so it was really nice to see Francia Raisa showing off her kidney-donation scar on the red carpet at People’s Ones to Watch event this week.
What have you done for your best friend lately, huh?
Raisa walked the red carpet in a white suit over a sheer beige body suit with some embellishments, allowing her scar to show. Talk about pride. We love that she chose to show off her scar at the event instead of wearing something that would cover it up. Hopefully other women out there with scars or marks on their body will feel empowered to do the same!
It’s all part of being body-positive, and we’re loving it. A lot of women feel shame about marks on their bodies — even though they often come from our bravest moments. Donating organs, powering through a scary illness that requires surgery, having a C-section to build their families. There’s no reason to Photoshop these things and pretend they don’t exist.
The whole surgery moved Raisa in major ways. She posted on Instagram, “I am beyond grateful that God would trust me with something that not only saved a life, but changed mine in the process. This was part of our story, and we will share it soon, but what is important now is that this is not the only story.”
Raisa added a link to LupusResearch.org, and her link alone raised somewhere around $500,000, according to E! News. ” Kenneth Farber, the alliance’s president and CEO, told E!:
"As a result of her encouragement to visit our website, LupusResearch.org, to learn about lupus, our phones have been ringing off the hook and our website traffic has soared. Selena has supported our organization in many ways, donating a portion of tickets sales for her last concert tour to the Lupus Research Alliance and requesting donations to us on the occasion of her birthday, as well as yesterday's announcement."

It sounds like what could have been a scary experience for both women was nothing but positive. Even the scars look good.
