Selena Gomez has addressed the controversies surrounding “13 Reasons Why”
It’s become one of Netflix’s most popular shows, but that hasn’t stopped it from hosting its own controversies, too. And now the show’s executive producer, Selena Gomez, has spoken about 13 Reasons Why in a new interview, where she’s not only praised the show but addressed its critics, too.
Sitting down with Elvis Duran and The Morning Show, Selena, who is currently promoting her hot new single “Bad Liar,” opened up about 13 Reasons Why, and some of the backlash the show has faced since it aired.
The singer said that she, as well as all those involved with the show, was overwhelmed by the response to Netflix hit, which broke Twitter records.
“We had the rights to the book for seven years, so we knew we wanted to do the book justice because it already had a following,” she said. “The content is complicated, it’s dark and it has moments that are honestly really hard to swallow.”
Continuing, the singer said that she understood that there would be some difficulties in terms of getting the tone of the adapting the book right, but that kids today are exposed to a lot of things that, when she was younger, she couldn’t have comprehended.
“I feel like if this is what we are going to talk about, we might as well do it in a way that’s going to be honest, it’s going to be real and it stays true to the book,” she explained.
Selena went on to say that she felt that the conversations surrounding the show were “all valid.”
“All the questions that came up and all the talk about it was all valid and I understand it,” she said. “But I think with season two we’re going to actually answer a lot of those questions and a lot of resolution with the characters are going to come.”
Finally, she addressed the controversial decision to show Hannah’s suicide in the show head on.
"This is happening every day, so whether or not you wanted to see it, that's what's happening," she said.

SelGo also spoke briefly about Season 2 of 13 Reasons Why, which was recently confirmed by Netflix, noting that when the show returns it’ll resolve some of the loose ends and that it would be “encouraging and empowering.”
“I went to the writers’ room the other day and I felt like I was watching a movie because I was freaking out on where they’re going ,” she revealed. “It’s actually really encouraging and empowering and so we’re going to take a little inspiration from the first and bring it into the second.”
Meanwhile, Selena Gomez also opened up about her latest track “Bad Lair,” and how she was “very single” when writing the track, which samples the Talking Heads.

We can’t wait until 13 Reasons Why returns next year. Like Selena says, while the show has certainly been controversial, it’s also helped open up discussions around mental health, sexual assault, and bullying. What’s more, we’re eager to find out what happens next, although if this news about the show focusing on Hannah again is true then who knows what resolutions we might get.
