As Seen on TV: ‘Game of Thrones’

We’re back with a remake from another one of our favorite TV shows! Last time, we made a piece of Lena Dunham’s NYC-chic wardrobe from Girls (lizard shirt, anyone??) and today we’re heading back into a different realm. That’s right, “winter is coming” (thank goodness not in real life) and it’s time to make a piece straight out of Game of Thrones!

I got into GOT a season late and spent two days binge watching before Season Two began and now I’m fully addicted. (PS – you won’t find any season four spoilers here, but things that have been revealed through season three might be found below…) The family dramas between House Stark and House Lannister to the battles, the marriages, and the beheadings (!!!), GOT is like the soap opera to end all soap operas, just with more blood, boobs, and a bigger budget! (Holler for some alliteration!!)

The amount of badassery from the ladies on this show is insane. I want to be Daenerys Targaryen, the “mother of dragons” like crazy, despite her being sold off by her brother, and losing her husband and child. She’s been through the ringer, but is ready to take of the Seven Kingdoms. Plus she has the most ridiculously amazing braided hair. Let’s get a tutorial on that, stat!

I also love little Arya Stark – she’s loyal and her sword wielding skills are beyond compare for a teen. (Where were sword lessons when I was a kid?)

This piece isn’t so much something that was directly worn on the show, but something made in the essence and inspired by Game of Thrones. I took inspiration from the other Stark sister, Sansa to craft it! It’s the perfect piece to wear to your weekly viewing parties.

Here’s a rundown of the supplies you’ll need:

  • 1. Fabric Dye in a muted shade (I went with green, but a lighter blue, tan, or yellow would be totally Sansa-apropos.)
  • 2. Vintage slip top/bustier/bodysuit (Mine is from the thrift store.)
  • 3. Small wreath/silk flowers for a headpiece
  • 4. White tulle
  • 5. Thread and a needle
  • 6. Tyrion Lannister poster
  • 7. Cardboard box, spray adhesive, and tape

I began with a thrifted ivory bodysuit…

…and dyed it a shade of green in the washing machine.

Post-dye, I started on a veil o’flowers! This was a wreath that I found at the Salvation Army, meant to be hung on a door. I had alternative plans. I snipped the ends of it to make it shorter and to turn it into a crown to fit my head. This is something that can alternatively be done with wire and silk flowers, or real flowers if you’re a floral headband wizard! Then to make it wedding appropriate, stitch some white tulle to the back for an aisle-ready look.

To finish up the GOT garb, since I’m going with a Sansa Stark look, I created a cardboard cut out of my new husband, Tyrion Lannister. He’s the best arm candy. This was crafted with a poster (I got this one at Amazon), some cardboard, a bit of spray adhesive, and tape.

The above crafted goodies paired with a vintage skirt that was found on that same Salvation Army run, completes the GOT costume. I feel like I’m ready to head to Westeros!!

Or the Ren Faire!!

Cute real life Lannister/Stark pairing…

I think I’m wearing this get up for each Game of Thrones viewing this season. Who’s having me over to watch?
