Second skin may be the only anti-aging product that legit works

The Fountain of Youth may exist and guess who found it? Science (of course). Rather than being a fountain flowing with magical, youth-inducing waters, the Fountain of Youth appears to be made of something that has the power to make wrinkles and undereye bags disappear.

Researchers at Harvard and M.I.T. recently reported in Nature Materials that the anti-aging product is called “second skin” and it’s composed of polymers (chains of repeating oxygen and silicon units). Applying this substance to our actual skin requires two steps. First, you apply an invisible cream containing the polymers. Then, on top of this layer, a catalyst is applied that allows the polymer chains to link up and form a complete coating.

The above process may be adjusted depending on what you want to use the second skin for. If the product is being used to treat undereye bags, the second skin doesn’t have to be as tightly linked together. However, if the skin is meant to hold medication against the skin, one can make it so that it’s stronger. On top of this, eczema, psoriasis, and severely dry skin can be cared for using second skin.

What’s perhaps the best part is that the second skin is completely invisible. This means that you can put it on, wear it out, allow it to work its concealing magic, and no one will be the wiser. The second skin also has the ability to last longer than a day; will return to normal after being pinched; and even hung on to subjects who wore the product in the rain, in water, and while working out. It will also prevent medications and creams from leaving the skin and ending up on your pillow at night.

Though it’s still in the early stages of development, the second skin looks promising. “I think it is brilliant,” Columbia biomedical engineering professor Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic told The New York Times. “What they have done is design a clever biomaterial that recapitulates the properties of young and healthy skin. The company funding this product is Living Proof (the company partially owned by Jennifer Aniston) and, later this year, they hope to have the FDA’s approval for marketing. Once this happens, it will be interesting to see if we can get our hands on this innovative creation.
