5 ways ‘Scooby-Doo’ ruined my life

It seems every week now we get news of an additional thing we’re rebooting or remaking or just bringing back for additional seasons. The latest: a just announced new Scooby-Doo movie—but instead of the live action movies of the recent yore—it’ll be animated. Scooby-Doo has existed in MANY iterations and I’ve watched most of them so here are five ways Scooby-Doo has ruined my life:

1. Got Super Jazzed at the Ending of Wayne’s World

I love when things I know are referenced in other things I know. It’s one of my great joys in life. So the ending of Wayne’s World was particularly thrilling for me as a little kid. I never really understood how ridiculous Scooby-Doo was until I watched this in Wayne’s World and totally got it.

2. Had to Face Facts That I’d Always Be Velma

I LOVE Velma. Of course. But you want to be Daphne. I mean, she has a cooler name, she has awesome hair and the best clothes. She’s the “idol.” And just like I had to face facts that I’m a total Monica and not a Rachel, I had to face facts that I was a total Velma and not a Daphne. But LBH, Velma rocked some rad glasses.

3. Made Me Want to be a Detective

First of all, I’m highly susceptible to detective stories. I loved Nancy Drew as a kid and Harriet the Spy, and much later, Veronica Mars, and I always thought I could maybe be a great detective. Obviously this is not the case because I’m, above all, a scaredy cat, but it’s nice to pretend.

4. Dreamed of Riding Around In a Van…For Fun

The Mystery Machine is the stuff both nightmares AND dreams are made of. On the one hand, scary van and one the other AWESOME VAN TO SHARE WITH YOUR FRIENDS. Ever since I saw Road Rules all I wanted was to drive around in an RV and these cartoon kids got to experience that very pleasure.

5. Laid the Groundwork for my Obsession with Buffy the Vampire Slayer

The mystery solving, the weird happenings in your town, the fact that the Buffy gang is referred to as the “Scoobies”… I mean, the groundwork was there for me to fall hard for Buffy given my affinity for Scooby-Doo. That was kids’ stuff and this got serious. And let’s not forget the Sarah Michelle Gellar of it all.
