Science has made a “diet” avocado, and we have questions
We love ourselves some avocado. They taste amazing, are packed with “good fats,” and contain vitamins. Plus they photograph well — which is great for our social media game. But we just heard of a “diet” avocado, and we have a lot of questions.
According to GrubStreet.com, the “Avocado Light,” as its parent company is calling it, was crafted by Eurobanan’s Isla Bonita. This new breed of avocado supposedly has a “mild” flavor and “juicier” pulp.
The Avocado Light apparently has 30% less fat than its regular counterpart.
The Avocado Light also supposedly ripens faster than the average avocado, yet oxidizes (browns) slower. Hmmm…interesting.
Now did we actually need a diet avocado? Existing food science points to no. HealthLine.com reports that normal old avocados are packed with Vitamins K, C, B5, B6, and E, as well as potassium and folate, and again, they contain what are widely regarded as healthy, unsaturated fats.

Eurobanan is only planning on selling their new avocado in Spain for the time being, so don’t get too excited to pick one up at your local American grocery store just yet.
Until we get to taste an Avocado Light for ourselves, we’re perfectly fine sticking with the regular old model…
