Sarah Silverman got very real about what it’s like putting work before motherhood
While any woman can conquer the Liz Lemon dream of “having it all,” it’s definitely a lot of work. That’s why it’s so refreshing to see Sarah Silverman’s tweets about putting her career before motherhood. Every woman needs to follow their heart and go their own way when it comes to working and parenting. Yet, rarely do we see women speak up about the hardship of choosing. Or, even admitting that a career is more important to them.
While children can be great, not all women look forward to starting a family. It’s a big job, and there are plenty of reasons as to why it might not be the right choice. For Silverman, who is in her late 40’s, surely she’s felt the pressure before.
That said, her tweets probably ring true to many.

Silverman then mentioned that “u can’t be a woman w/out sacrifice & that’s the fact jack.”

Silverman also gave a shout out to her comedian brothers. “They’re my family & for a lot of us women comic sisters, our only family,” she noted.
And, hey — we like that she acknowledged that family can come in all shapes and sizes. You don’t need to have a blood connection to be family. For Silverman, she may not have children, but she does have so many people she can count on.
Silverman’s tweets definitely brought some controversy, but the fact is, she’s speaking her own truth. Silverman constantly has a busy schedule, having been in the business since the very early ’90s with rarely any downtime.
She did end up clarifying this, since some women tried to point out that they’ve managed to have a rewarding work and home balance.

Silverman is just a reminder that every life is a little different, and there shouldn’t be a specific script that we need to stick to. It’s okay if you choose not to get married, and it’s okay if you choose not to raise children. Likewise, it’s okay to quit a career in favor of motherhood, and it’s okay to settle down when you feel ready to. And, more power to you if you decide to tackle both.
