Sarah Michelle Gellar’s mammogram pic at the doctor’s office is important for so many reasons

If you’ve been following Shannen Doherty’s battle with cancer, then you know that she’s had her friend Sarah Michelle Gellar by her side during this difficult time. Beyond the Buffy the Vampire Slayer star supporting Doherty, Gellar is also taking care of her own health, as she showed with an Instagram post on February 22nd. Not only are we glad that Gellar is looking after herself, but her picture provided a great reminder to women everywhere about how important mammograms are.
On her photo of a mammography machine — the X-ray machine that compresses your breasts to help detect breast cancer early — Gellar wrote:
"As a wife, a mother, a daughter and a friend I do everything I can to make sure I'm healthy for my loved ones. Today I got my first mammogram. Not my ideal way to spend the day, but so important. #breastcancerawareness #cancerslayer
Since Gellar turns 40 on April 14th and most doctors advise women to start getting mammograms at age 40 for early detection, she is on this whole breast cancer thing. And that’s for a really good reason, since Gellar has been watching Doherty battle breast cancer since 2015.
Gellar even presented Doherty the Courage Award at the American Cancer Society’s Giants of Science Los Angeles Gala on November 5th, 2016.
As her post mentions, Gellar also wants to ensure she’s healthy for her family. She understandably wants to be there for her husband Freddie Prinze Jr. and their precious kids Charlotte and Rocky.
Using her friend’s hashtag of #cancerslayer takes on a whole other meaning with Gellar, since she’s the ultimate slayer — vampire slayer — in our hearts. So while she admits getting a mammogram isn’t the most fun way to spend a day, her post reminds women (and men) everywhere that monitoring your body is one of the best ways to stay healthy.
