Sara Gilbert is speaking out about Roseanne’s cancellation — which she is both happy and sad about
To say that it has been a whirlwind of a week for TV giant ABC would be an understatement. While many applauded them for pulling the plug on the Roseanne reboot after Roseanne Barr’s racist barrage on Twitter, there are also tons of people saying that the show shouldn’t have been revived on the first place. Now, Sara Gilbert — executive producer on the revival and the actress behind Darlene Conner-Healy — has further addressed the show’s cancellation.
On The Talk‘s first live show following the shocking collapse of Roseanne, Gilbert opened with a tearful statement regarding the issue.
"I would like to say this has been a very difficult week. A lot of people have been hurt by this," she said. “I am proud of the show we made. The show has always been about diversity, love, and inclusion. And it’s sad to see it end in this way. I’m sad for the people who lost their jobs in the process. However, I do stand behind the decision that ABC made."
Gilbert’s co-host, Sheryl Underwood, also weighed in on the matter.
"I'm really glad to hear you say that because as a black woman who is a comedian, I'm very, very proud of Channing Dungey, the president of ABC Entertainment," she shared. "And as Spike Lee says, a lot of people came together to do the right thing and I'm happy to see that it was done swiftly."
“Canceling the show so quickly sent a strong message and the right message, that’s for sure,” added Julie Chen.
But all hope may not be lost for Roseanne fans. It has been previously reported that ABC is coming up with ways to salvage the show, because as Jimmy Kimmel once said, “Just because Roseanne is gone, it doesn’t mean the whole show has to go. The show must go on.”
The network is currently in talks about possibly creating a spin-off centered around Gilbert’s Darlene. It’s also possible that they go on a different direction, and design a brand new show featuring John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf, along with Michael Fishman, Lecy Goranson, and the newcomers. I guess we’ll have to just wait and see.
