This is why Saoirse Ronan doesn’t consider herself famous

Between hosting Saturday Night Live, receiving an Oscar nod for her performance in Lady Bird, and even appearing in Ed Sheeran’s music video for “Galway Girl,” Saoirse Ronan has been very busy lately. But despite all of her recent successes, the actress recently revealed that she doesn’t consider herself famous.

Ronan appears on the cover of the August 2018 issue of Vogue. In the accompanying interview published on July 11th, the 24-year-old Ireland native admitted that she’s always surprised when people recognize her on the streets (despite what her SNL promo would have us believe).

"I still get completely shocked that anyone knows who I am," she told Vogue writer Jamie Hawkesworth after being approached for a photo.

Ronan also noted that she’d prefer to be able to act without also being a celebrity.

"But I'm not...famous," she added. "I just genuinely don't think I am. Selena Gomez is famous." The actress went on to say that she doesn't like to read articles about herself — or even look at photos. "If you’re not aware of how often you’re in a newspaper, then it’s like it’s not really happening."

She concluded the thought with, “I just get so anxious when I watch anything I’m in. I’m fine with the way I look now. But I wouldn’t necessarily be looking at photographs of myself all day. I don’t want to be too consumed by the image of myself.”

Despite her down-to-earth attitude, Ronan also has plenty of accomplishments to be proud of. She received her first Academy Award nomination at just 13 years old for Best Supporting Actress in 2007’s Atonement. Since then, she’s received two more Oscars noms. She’s also an outspoken abortion rights activist, and according to The Guardian, she was involved in the movement to repeal Ireland’s Eighth Amendment, making abortion in Ireland legal again.

Ronan may not consider herself famous, but she’s a mega-star in our eyes. Keep doing you, Saoirse!
