Ellen Pompeo had the sweetest reaction to Sandra Oh’s historic Golden Globes win

Sandra Oh just made Asian herstory at the 2019 Golden Globes. The Korean-Canadian actress took home the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama for her role as Eve Polastri in BBC America’s Killing Eve, making her only the second Asian actress to win a Golden Globe for a leading television role in 38 years. During her emotional speech, she thanked her parents, who were in the audience in the Beverly Hilton for the ceremony.

As NBC Asian America notes, Japanese actress Yoko Shimada was the first to nab the award in 1981 for her role in the miniseries Shōgun. Additionally, Oh is the first person of Asian descent to host the Golden Globes and to win multiple Globes, according to CNN. In 2006, the Killing Eve actress won for Best Supporting Actress in a Series for her role as Cristina Yang in Shonda Rhimes’ hit series Grey’s Anatomy.

Her former Grey’s costar, Ellen Pompeo, had the sweetest reaction to her friend’s win:

The win comes on the heels of an emotional opening monologue alongside co-host Andy Samberg earlier in the evening. The actress lauded the significance of telling diverse stories when she revealed why she agreed to take the gig.

“I said yes to the fear of being on this stage tonight because I wanted to be here and look out onto this audience and witness this moment of change. I’m not fooling myself. Next year could be different and probably will be. But right now, this moment is real. Trust me, it is real. Because I see you. And I see you—all of these faces of change. And now so will everyone else.

Congratulations, Sandra! The 2019 Golden Globes airs tonight, January 6th on NBC.
