This legendary hip-hop group wants Ava DuVernay to direct their biopic

In the past few years, the film world has delivered up biopics on several male hip-hop legends. NWA got Straight Outta Compton; Biggie got Notorious; Tupac’s All Eyez On Me comes out in June. So it’s not that strange to wonder, where the ladies at? Hip-hop icons Salt-N-Pepa wondered the same thing.
In a new interview, the women behind “Push It” and “Let’s Talk About Sex” are gunning for their own film. And top of their list to direct it: Ava DuVernay.
Now, DuVernay has plenty of projects on her plate. Let’s not forget about A Wrinkle in Time and that Lupita Nyong’o/Rihanna buddy scammer movie. (Which, oh my god.) But while speaking to Broadly, Cheryl James (Salt) dropped this tidbit:
"There's actually been a conversation with Ava DuVernay so we've got some interest over there. She's really trailblazing right now as a director. She's deep. She made that Netflix documentary, 13th, which I think everyone should see."
As for what will be the film’s focus? As James explains:
"We were friends before and even Hurby, our producer, was my boyfriend. So this all came from relationships that came together and made a group ... We've triumphed through all the misogyny in hip-hop and maintained our success."
A Salt-N-Pepa female friendship hip-hop biopic under DuVernay’s masterful eye? Yeah, we’re already saving space in our calendars for it.
