Who is Sally Hawkins? Here’s what to know about “The Shape of Water” actress

Guillermo del Toro’s fantasy film The Shape of Water leads the 2018 Oscars with a total of 13 nominations this year, which is super impressive. Set against the backdrop of the Cold War era, The Shape of Water follows an isolated woman named Elisa (Sally Hawkins) who falls in love with a mysterious creature she discovers in the high-security government lab she works in. The film also stars Octavia Spencer, Michael Shannon, and Richard Jenkins.

Of the film’s 13 nominations, English actress Sally Hawkins is nominated for Best Actress in a Drama Motion Picture. Despite garnering award buzz, Hawkins remains fairly unknown in comparison to other nominees this award season. But she’s hardly a newcomer to Hollywood—nor is this her first award show nomination or win. So who is Sally Hawkins? Here are a few things you should know.

Hawkins has been nominated for an Academy Award

Hawkins was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in 2014 for her role in Woody Allen’s 2014 film Blue Jasmine alongside Cate Blanchett.

Hawkins once made a marriage pact with James Corden.

It’s true. Hawkins co-starred with the now host of The Late Late Show with James Corden in the 2002 film All or Nothing, which marked her acting debut. The pair made a pact that if they weren’t married by the age of 35, they’d marry each other, which obviously didn’t happen since Corden married in 2012.

Guillermo del Toro wrote the lead role of The Shape of Water with Hawkins in mind.

Del Toro was a huge fan of Hawkins way before the casting of The Shape of Water and apparently wrote the starring role with her in mind. In a Vulture article, he recalls meeting Hawkins for the first time, tipsy on tequila, and told her: “I’m writing a movie for you where you fall in love with a fish-man!”

Hawkins has upcoming roles in Paddington 2 and Godzilla: King of Monsters.

According to her IMDB, Hawkins will be gracing our screens once more with roles in the upcoming Paddington 2 out January 12th and Godzilla out in 2019. Something tells us Hawkins is on her way to solidifying herself as a household name.

The 90th Academy Awards air Sunday, March 4th at 4 p.m. PST/7 p.m. EST.
