The “Riverdale” spin-off about Sabrina is happening — at Netflix

Sabrina Spellman will officially be working her magic on TV again…but it won’t be on The CW, as previously thought. For some spellbinding great news, Sabrina will call *Netflix* home. The still-untitled Riverdale spin-off following the teen witch was initially in development at The CW, as the network looked to expand its Archie universe, but Netflix has reportedly picked up the series for a two season, 20 episode order.

But just like Riverdale turned the goofy comics into a Twin Peaks murder mystery, the new Sabrina series is going to be *pretty* dark as its based on supernatural comic series, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

According to The Hollywood Reporterwho broke the news:

"[The show]reimagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age tale that traffics in horror, the occult and witchcraft. It's described as in the vein of Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist and finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature as a half-witch, half-mortal while fighting the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit."

So we’re going to go out on a limb here, and assume Salem *doesn’t* tell jokes in this new series.

While it’s unclear whether Sabrina and Riverdale will still exist in the same universe now that they’ll be airing on different platforms, both shows will still be part of the same family behind the scenes. Chief creative officer for Archie comics Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who wrote the Sabrina script and is showrunner for Riverdale, will serve as executive producer for the series alongside Riverdale executive producers Greg Berlanti, Jon Goldwater, and Sarah Schechter.

While it might come as a surprise that Netflix was willing to shell out for a teen drama like this, the streaming platform totally gets just how popular the CW teen drama is. The second season of Riverdale saw its numbers quadruple after the first season became available on Netflix — thanks, binge watching!

This means we’re hopefully one step closer to the ultimate cross network event that would be Afterlife with Archie.
