Netflix’s “Sabrina” reboot has found its Harvey — and oh my Greendale, he’s a perfect fit
Netflix’s highly anticipated reboot of Sabrina the Teenage Witch is slowly coming together, and now the streaming platform has finally cast Sabrina’s lovable boyfriend. Austin & Ally star Ross Lynch will fill the role of Harvey Kinkle, opposite Kiernan Shipka’s Sabrina, and we couldn’t be more excited about this announcement.
Like his predecessor in the ABC sitcom, it seems Lynch’s Harvey will be blissfully unaware of the magical happenings around him — at least, at first. According to Entertainment Weekly, Netflix’s Harvey is, “the son of a coal miner, a dreamboat and a dreamer, completely unaware of the dark forces conspiring to keep him and Sabrina apart.”
And while Lynch is best known for lighthearted projects like Teen Beach Movie, the actor recently shed his Disney Channel roots to play serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer in My Friend Dahmer. So he’s definitely no stranger to going dark. Which will come in handy here.
The still untitled Sabrina series will be a major departure from the sitcom, instead following the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comics.
The show, which has previously been described as being “in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist” — yes, really — is being helmed by the same creative mind behind Riverdale: Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is writing, directing, and executive producing the series. While the series was originally being shopped to The CW as a companion series for Riverdale, Netflix eagerly scooped it up, giving it an immediate two season, 20 episode order.
Lynch joins Wonder Woman‘s Lucy Davis who has already been tapped to play Aunt Hilda, while Homeland’s Miranda Otto will play Aunt Zelda. And for those worried about the appearance of a particular black cat, Aguirre-Sacasa has already reassured fans that Salem will definitely be in the Netflix series. *Phew*
While the series is from the same people responsible for beloved teen-noir drama Riverdale, we have a feeling Sabrina is going to be just a bit more terrifying.
According to the press release, the series is a “dark coming-of-age tale that traffics in horror, the occult and witchcraft“and will follow Sabrina as she struggles to understand her “dual nature as a half-witch, half-mortal while fighting the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.”
Netflix has yet to announce a release date for the series but when it does, we may be watching this one with the lights on.
