Ryan Reynolds will play Pikachu in the live-action Pokémon movie, and wow, I wish I was making this up
Just when you think movie adaptations can’t get any weirder, it happens. You know that live-action Pokémon movie? It’s happening. And you know who’s going to star in the live-action Pokémon movie? Ryan Reynolds. And you know who Ryan Reynolds is going to play in the live-action Pokémon movie? Pikachu. Ryan Reynolds is going to play Pikachu.
That’s a sentence I never thought I’d write. But here we are. We are now living in a Ryan Reynolds Pikachu world.
The live-action movie, which is currently being called Detective Pikachu, will have Reynolds in the role of the titular detective, who must find the missing father of one of the other characters in the movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter, who first broke the news, Justice Smith (from the upcoming Jurassic World sequel) plays the teen with the MIA father who Pikachu is trying to help track down. Big Little Lies’ Kathryn Newton plays a “sassy journalist” who helps these two out along the way.
Just want to quickly reiterate that this is a real movie that is going to happen, and will star Reynolds, who is currently playing Deadpool and was also in that great Sandra Bullock movie, The Proposal. Before you start thinking that Reynolds is going to put on a giant, inflatable Pikachu suit (and maybe dance around in it) the role will supposedly be motion capture. But you can almost certainly bet that at some point during the press tour for the movie, Reynolds will put on a inflatable Pikachu suit and dance around it in. That is, like, going to happen.

Reynolds hasn’t tweeted about this yet, which is weird, and I await that cheeky tweet. Blake Lively also hasn’t tweeted about it yet either, and I await whatever sassy, snarky comment she’s going to make about her husband playing Pikachu. So maybe this won’t be all bad?
