Ryan Gosling may be diving into a movie about underwater ghosts

Fresh off the La La Land award circuit, fans have been waiting for another Ryan Gosling project. Well, the wait is over! Because Ryan Gosling may be diving into a movie about underwater ghosts. In spite of being mostly known for his on-screen work, Ryan is moving into a new role and developing the project himself.

Furthermore, Gosling is producing the movie.

The Academy Award-nominated actor is adapting a graphic novel for the big screen. The original work is The Underwater Welder by Jeff Lemire. While on the surface, it’s a story about an offshore oil rig worker named Jack Joseph, there are so many more layers to it.

Additionally, the graphic novel hails from Canada and is published by Top Shelf Productions. Because Ryan is famously Canadian, it makes sense that he chose this project to sink his producing teeth into. But there are even more reasons why this project is so fascinating.

Jeff Lemire wrote about an offshore oil rig worker who is expecting a newborn child with his wife. While his job is extremely dangerous and isolating, Jack Joseph feels more comfortable being underwater than becoming a father. According to the graphic novel’s plot, during one of his dives, Jack encounters a mystical creature. It gives Jack the power to reconnect with the ghost of his late father. The rest of the story centers around Jack coming to terms with fatherhood.

As a relatively new father himself, Ryan has some similarities with the main character.

While we have no idea if Ryan will act in the film, knowing he’s there will give it a lot of layers. Maybe he’ll make an appearance as one of the underwater ghosts!

Ryan Gosling is joined by Ken Kao and Anonymous Content as producers on the project. Hopefully, as this project builds steam, we will get more details about it. Who knows, maybe it will end up at the 2018 Oscars.
