Here’s the only news that matters today: Ryan Coogler would 100% make a female Black Panther movie
Ryan Coogler truly is the gift that keeps on giving. After gracing the world with the epic superhero masterpiece that is Black Panther, the director revealed that he is open to creating a spinoff to the blockbuster hit. But instead of carrying on with the story of King T’challa, the movie would champion female representation even further than its predecessor.
Get this: Coogler says he is 100% down to make a female Black Panther spinoff.
Nakia, Okoye, and the rest of the Dora Milaje as the central characters of a film? Shuri, newly-helmed Disney princess and tech extraordinaire donning a vibranium suit and becoming the new queen and savior of Wakanda? COUNT. US. IN.
“I think you could argue they are more important,”Coogler told Variety, when asked if the women of Black Panther bear the same level of significance as the men in the film. And he’s right about that. Without our fierce female heroes, Killmonger probably would have taken total control of Wakanda.
"There’s a whole section of the film where T’Challa is out of the movie and you’re just following the women, he continued. "That’s one of my favorite parts of the movie when I watched it, and I didn’t expect that... That part of the movie you feel like you’re watching something fresh and new. That part of it was exciting. We have these actresses who could easily carry their own movie."
And so when the possibility of an all-female Black Panther spinoff was brought up, Coogler expressed excitement. “Oh man,” he said. “That would be amazing if the opportunity came up. They did it in the comic-book version.”
As we all know, the Marvel Cinematic Universe often deviates from the comic books, and if a female Black Panther film were to happen, it would be interesting to see how it would play out. Seeing as Killmonger already got rid of all the remaining heart-shaped herbs, Shuri might have to come up with other means to acquire (or even surpass) Black Panther’s power. But that might not even be a problem for Shuri. She is a certified genius, and we’re confident she can solve ALL the problems.
So Marvel and Disney, please make this happen. It certainly is the WRIGHT move.
