’90s cartoon fans unite! A “Rugrats” reboot could be close

There are some cartoons from childhood that just hold a special place in our hearts, and we secretly harbor dreams that they’ll be resurrected in our lifetime.

One of those special cartoons — if maybe not the most special — is Rugrats, because who could forget the shenanigans of toddlers Tommy, Chuckie, twins Phil and Lil, and the ridiculously spoiled Angelica?

It’s coming up on the 25th anniversary of the cartoon, and according to Vanessa Coffey (the producer largely responsible for starting the show, along with other favorites Doug and The Ren & Stimpy Show) a reboot is seriously being considered.

Two of the three Rugrats creators, Arlene Klasky and Paul Germain, have weighed in on the discussion, and although they’re both interested in pursuing a reboot, they have differing opinions about the direction it should take.

Klasky is intrigued by how kids’ worlds have changed in the last 25 years with the advancement of technology, and thinks that could be great for Rugrats. “Imagine [the Rugrats] going to preschool and they’re coding and what could possibly come out of some kind of crazy thing they invented or did something viral.” 

But Germain is more interested in keeping Rugrats old school. “One of the things I think might be fun would be to just make the show a retro ‘90s show.” 

He goes on to explain his stance on technology, “Cell phones can be interesting, but technology has a funny way of making it very difficult to write around because people are always in constant communication with each other in a way that works against drama.”

Are you listening, Nickelodeon? The show’s creators are on board (they just need to agree on some things), and so are the fans (obviously!), so let’s quit wasting time and get this show on the road!
