Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are inviting 2,000 regular folk to their royal wedding — and you can be one of them
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry really are the ~new~ royals. While there is a ton of tradition steeped into British royal culture, Markle and Harry are breaking rules wherever they can. The latest one? They are inviting over 2,000 regular folks to their wedding. Yes, really. Okay, to be fair, the guests aren’t really attending the wedding, but rather they get to enter the castle grounds and watch the royal arrivals and departures.
So the royal itinerary goes: 1) royals and guests arrive to the chapel at Windsor Castle, 2) the bride and groom ride off in a carriage, 3) the reception kicks off elsewhere at Windsor Castle — meanwhile, 2,000+ members of the public are standing on the castle grounds watching and cheering and maybe throwing rose petals? (Probably not that last thing.) It’s like getting invited to a wedding venue, but not the wedding. But still, we’ll take it.
"Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle have said they want their Wedding Day to be shaped so as to allow members of the public to feel part of the celebrations too," read an official statement from Kensington Palace. "Prince Harry and Ms. Markle have invited 2,640 people into the grounds of Windsor Castle to watch the arrivals of the Bride and Groom, and their wedding guests, at the chapel and to watch the carriage procession as it departs from the castle."

Apparently, you have to be nominated to snag an invite. According to the Palace, “1,200 members of the public from every corner of the United Kingdom will be nominated to attend by nine regional Lord Lieutenant offices. The couple has asked that the people chosen are from a broad range of backgrounds and ages, including young people who have shown strong leadership, and those who have served their communities.”

In addition to the 1,200 invites reserved for *nominated* members of the public, invites will also go out to: 200 members of local charities, 100 children from local schools, 610 Windsor Castle community members, and 530 members of The Royal Households.
