The royal baby has officially left the hospital, and here’s everything we know
It’s official: A new prince has joined the royal family. Today, April 23rd, Kate Middleton and Prince William welcomed their third child to much excitement from the public. And now, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been released from the hospital, granting us our first glance of the new royal baby boy.
The prince was reportedly born just after 11 a.m. at the Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital in London. Live updates from The Telegraph revealed pictures of Middleton, clad in a red dress with Peter Pan collar, holding her newborn son. And a few minutes later, the Kensington Palace also shared an image of Middleton and William with the prince, whose name has not been revealed yet. “Welcome to the family,” the official tweet read in a simple but sweet message.
At about seven hours, the Duchess of Cambridge only spent a short time in the hospital following this royal birth. But according to a 2016 article in The Guardian, British women as a whole have exceptionally short postnatal hospitalizations; they spend, on average, a day and a half in the hospital after giving birth. Middleton herself only spent 10 hours at St. Mary’s after the birth of Princess Charlotte, although she did spend the night at the hospital when she gave birth to Prince George in 2013.

The new royal baby boy is reportedly fifth in line for succession of the throne, behind his older sister Charlotte. And his birth has been greeted with fanfare. The new prince’s arrival was announced with not only an official statement in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace, but with an actual town crier. And shortly before the little prince’s first public appearance, his siblings, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, met him for the first time.
