Roxane Gay just announced a new book of essays about sexual harassment and rape culture
It can be hard to talk about painful topics like sexual assault. But when we can read our complicated feelings articulated beautifully by writers, it can be easier to find our own voice. Roxane Gay, feminist saint and author of books like Bad Feminist, Difficult Women, and Hunger, is one of those writers. Her unrelenting, down-to-the-bone honesty makes her work especially powerful. And luckily for us, Gay is working on a new book of essays. Only this time, she’ll be sitting in the editor’s seat.
The anthology is called Not That Bad: Dispatches From Rape Culture. According to Harper Collins, the book’s publisher, the collection will “address what it means to live in a world where women have to measure the harassment, violence, and aggression they face, and where they are ‘routinely second-guessed, blown off, discredited, denigrated, besmirched, belittled, patronized, mocked, shamed, gaslit, insulted, bullied’ for speaking out.”
Stories of sexual misconduct in Hollywood and beyond have been all over the news recently. So Gay’s book of essays will arrive at a time we need it most. Horrifying news that reflects the patriarchal and misogynistic reality that women have to confront on a daily basis can be unsettling and paralyzing. But reading the wise words of female authors is always a blessing.
On Friday, Gay announced the book by sharing its cover and release date (May 1st of next year) on Twitter.
