This new “Rogue One” featurette gives the movie a super retro “Star Wars” feel
To say fans are “excited” for the reemergence of Star Wars in pop culture is a huge understatement. Luckily, we’ve got a shiny new featurette for Rogue One, the first Star Wars anthology film — and it’s coming only days after the latest Rogue One trailer was released. So, basically we feel like we’ve gone to Star Wars heaven.
This new featurette gives us a glorious taste of behind-the-scenes footage. It also showcases Roge One’s diverse cast of characters including warrior Chirrut Îmwe, pilot Bodhi Rook, and of course, Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso.
This look at the new chapter of the Star Wars saga perhaps most exciting, though, because of the retro vibes it gives us. And that’s not a mistake: The events of Rogue One take place right before those in Star Wars: A New Hope. In other words, this movie happens right before the original trilogy of Star Wars films.
Says director Gareth Edwards, “Rogue One takes place very close to Episode IV. The simplest way to explain it is – that text you see at the beginning of A New Hope, that is essentially our movie.”

Due to this, Edwards is making some conscious choices to mirror shots from A New Hope. Also, the costume design of the characters evokes the original Star Wars films; Jyn’s boots-and-vest combo evokes Han Solo’s signature look.
Speaking of Jyn, we’re obsessed with what the team behind Rogue One is giving us regarding the character. Says Edwards, “It is an ensemble movie, but at the heart of it is a strong woman.” PREACH, Gareth Edwards.
We LOVE that this film is continuing the trend set up in The Force Awakens by giving us another strong, self-assured, and unstoppable woman as a central figure. The moment in the trailer where she takes down a bunch of Stormtroopers has us shouting, “YAAAAS.”
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story lands in theaters on December 16th. You can bet we’ll be there at midnight, ready to go on this retro, Rebel Alliance ride.
