The “Rogue One” editors just spilled on *exactly* what was added to the movie in the reshoots

Rogue One has been out for three weeks, and for three weeks we’ve been talking about nothing but Rogue One (okay, FINE, I’ve been talking about nothing but Rogue One).

The movie was certainly great, and a stellar first jump into the expanded Star Wars ~story~ universe. But even more so than that, it’s hard to not think about what could have been — you know, the extensive reshoots that Rogue One went through, which may, or may not, have altered the outcome of the movie.

We know that many key elements were changed these reshoots, and many scenes from the original trailer ended up on the cutting room floor. We know that originally Rogue One had a very different (and happier) ending. What we don’t know is exactly what was changed from one version of the movie to the other, but now we’ve got somewhat of an idea.

Rogue One had three editors working on it, and two of them are now talking. John Gilroy (yes, brother of Tony Gilroy, who actually helped with the Rogue One reshoots) and Colin Goudie recently spoke with Yahoo Movies about the process to bring the movie to the big screen, and as they explained, “it was a case of working out [the movie and] as the story went on, which pieces need a bit more clarification, which places needed a bit more character.” Thus, reshoots.

While might never know what scenes were taken out of the movie (we’ll always have the original trailers for that!), we do know a few things that were put in. Like, the very beginning of the movie where we first meet Cassian. According to the editors, that whole scene (the one where Cassian shoots the spy) was added in the reshoots. So was Bhodi’s introduction where he meets Saw’s people.

What’s most interesting is that Jyn’s whole introduction was reworked. According to Gilroy, “How we set her up and her escape from the transporter, that was all done to set up the story better,” Gilroy explained, with Goudie adding, “Having [Jyn] in prison and then a prison break out, with Cassian on a mission… everybody was a bit more ballsy, or a bit more exciting, and a bit more interesting.” Originally, we saw her as a young girl, and then flashforward to her in a meeting with the Rebel leaders.

And while the editors don’t go into too much detail about what changed in the third act of the film, they do admit that LOTS was switched around. As Gilroy puts it, “We moved some of the things that our heroes did, they were different in the original then they were as it was conceived.”

We still don’t know everything that was switched around from one version to the next, but this now gives us a much clearly picture of it all. You can check out Gilroy and Goudie’s full interview (packed with so much Star Wars trivia) over on Yahoo Movies.
