RIP Chrissy Amphlett: You Made It Cool To Talk About Masturbation

Chrissy Amphlett, of the iconic rock band The Divinyls, died last Saturday in New York at the tragically young age of 53. The singer had been suffering from breast cancer and multiple sclerosis and finally succumbed to both illnesses.

If you never lip-synched “I Touch Myself” in front of your mirror with a hairbrush to your mouth, then you definitely missed out, because this song not only is the sh*t, but was one of the first to publicly celebrate masturbation.  So thank you, Chrissy. Thank you for embracing self-love, our beautiful bodies and female sexuality. Thank you for your bodacious music, sassy red hair and overwhelming strength. Your spirit lives on in every go-getter, every scrunchy-wearing ’90s wild child in combat boots and every independent girl or guy who isn’t afraid to express themselves.

Charley Drayton, Chrissy’s husband of 14 years and former Divinyls drummer and producer, stated: “Chrissy’s light burns so very brightly. Hers was a life of passion and creativity; she always lived it to the fullest…With her force of character and vocal strength, she paved the way for strong, sexy, outspoken women.”

After the singer revealed that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010, Chrissy decided “I Touch Myself” could also serve as a mantra for girls, woman (and guys too!) that could remind them to self-examine their breasts often, since prevention and early detection is crucial.

In honor of Chrissy Amphlett, let’s truly praise ourselves through and through, embrace and feast on every single day like it’s our last, and love ourselves like no one’s loved anyone before.
